Northern Vietnam

The best time to visit Northern Vietnam, such as Hanoi, and Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh province), is September-October and March-May.

Northern Vietnam is located right inside the Tropic of Cancer with distinct seasons. September and October are cool at around 20-25oC and often sunny. Most of the creatures bloom in the highlands around Sa Pa and Ha Giang as the golden rice fields are ready to be harvested.

Meanwhile, Hanoi usually celebrates the vibrant Mid-Autumn Festival in October. At this time, the sky is filled with paper lanterns and the air is fragrant with moon cakes.

December to February can be cold, especially in the highlands, where it occasionally snows in Ha Giang and Sa Pa. Hanoi is often foggy and drizzly at this time. Therefore, not many tourists choose to go to the North at this time.

Central Vietnam

On the contrary, February to May is the best time to visit Central Vietnam such as the Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An areas.

Central Vietnam has a tropical climate. The rainy and dry seasons are distinct. Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An are usually dry from February to August. Temperatures reach below 30oC during the peak summer months. February to May is milder than June to August, with temperatures ranging from 20-30oC.

The rainy season in the central region lasts from September to February. Rain can be torrential in October and November, with the possibility of storms and localized flooding.

Further south is Nha Trang, one of Vietnam’s main coastal cities with 300 sunny days and a mild rainy season from September to December.

In contrast, the climate in Da Lat and the Central Highlands remains mild compared to the hot beaches even during the peak summer. Meanwhile, the dry season here falls from November to March.

Southern Vietnam

The southern region of Vietnam, from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta, is suitable for tourists to explore from December to April.

The tropical climate of southern Vietnam varies little throughout the year, but there is still a distinct dry and rainy season. However, the weather in Ho Chi Minh City is unpredictable during the day. You can start the day with morning sunshine, increase humidity in the afternoon, and have a rainstorm that lasts several hours.

In addition to weather and climate, international visitors should be aware if they come to Vietnam during the Lunar New Year, usually in late January, or early February. During this most important festival in Vietnam, families often gather together. Many businesses and food establishments close for a few days. Therefore, traveling and eating will be relatively more difficult than usual.
