How to Plan Your USA Road Trip

Although I love to grab my favorite backpack and travel wherever the wind takes me, I also love to dedicate time and energy to planning an awesome trip that will provide me with memories for years to come. One of the destinations on my bucket list has always been the United States of America. From watching some of my favorite movies, I’ve learned that you can’t travel to America without embarking on the all-American road trip. That’s just how it works. If you’re looking to do the same, this is how to plan your USA road trip.

Work Out the Duration of The Trip

If you’ve made the decision to book your USA road trip, you first need to work out how long you’re going to travel. How many vacation days do you have left? How many days do you need to put aside to get there before you can explore what this country has to offer?

Once you’ve worked out whether you’re going for one week, two weeks, two months, or even a whole year, you can get started on booking your flights and getting your insurance in order – healthcare in America is not cheap if you get caught short! After all, you have to be as prepared as you possibly can be!

Choose Where You Want to Go

Because America is so large, it’s always best to work out how long your road trip will be before you can choose where you want to go. You don’t want to set your heart on a certain area of the country to realize that you won’t even be able to drive halfway there before your return flight home.

So, it’s important to really think about what kind of vibe you want from your USA road trip. For example, America’s Heartland or even a series of road trips in the summer? Yes, with cities, deserts, farmland, mountains, and more to choose from, this country is so diverse you will always be able to find somewhere that takes your fancy. Once you’ve done this, you can plan your route.

Planning an USA road trip

Pinpoint What You Want to See

Once you have decided where you want to go in America, you can truly pinpoint what you want to see so that you don’t leave the country without ticking something off your bucket list. Want to see a specific landmark? Make sure you add it to your itinerary. Want to visit that particular museum? Place a huge circle on your map.

There are many tour operators in the US for you to refer to. They have many model tours with a lot of destinations in which you can take a look to prepare your plan carefully. For example, Trek America has its specific pinpoint of destinations in different regions of the US. Otherwise, reading itineraries from travel bloggers is always a great idea too. To illustrate, this Utah National Parks road trip is a good reference for the place. Indeed, those would definitely help you plan a lot, definitely.

Although I love to be spontaneous every so often, it’s always best to plan your USA road trip to ensure you get the most out of your experience. Indeed, there are the best road trips in the USA that surely bring you amazing moments. You don’t want to go home with a whole host of regrets in your locker.

Hire Some Wheels

Once you know where you’re going, how long for, and what you specifically want to see, it’s about time you hired yourself some wheels. Of course, if you live in the USA you can simply use your own car, campervan, or RV – but you can’t do that if you’re traveling from abroad. Because of this, you need to investigate car hire companies that will be able to provide you with an awesome car.

These companies will offer everything from vintage Cadillacs to electric Teslas, so it’s really up to you what kind of car suits you and your budget. It’s always good to factor in the cost of gas into your budget when booking your car because all of that driving can really add up.

I love a good road trip as much as the next person, and an all-American road trip has always been on my bucket list. Have you planned your own USA road trip? Let me know all about it in the comments.

I think the steps you mention would be part of my approach too. I suppose Greyhound coaches could be an option too.
