Our journey began with a flight from Toronto to Calgary International Airport. We landed around noon and headed straight to the rental car area.

Trust me, exploring Alberta requires a car. Public transportation does not reach many natural attractions. Thus, renting a vehicle makes road trips simple and flexible.

Our family booked two vehicles from Enterprise Rent-A-Car at the airport. They gave us a Mercedes GLC and a Chrysler Pacifica, which worked well for a family trip. Indeed, a comfortable car becomes important when driving between destinations such as Banff, Drumheller, and Lake Louise.

1.2. Driving Through Alberta’s Dinosaur Country

After leaving Calgary, we drove northeast toward the town of Drumheller. The scenery gradually changed as we approached the Badlands. Rolling prairie landscapes slowly transformed into dramatic rock formations and deep valleys.

Drumheller is famous for its dinosaur fossils and the world’s largest dinosaur, Tyra. The region contains some of the richest fossil beds in the world. Visitors often call this area Canada’s dinosaur capital.

The highlight of the day was the incredible Royal Tyrrell Museum. This museum ranks among the best dinosaur museums on Earth.

1.4. Lunch in Drumheller

After exploring the museum, we stopped for lunch at a local pho restaurant in Drumheller. The warm bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup felt perfect after walking through the museum. Besides that, the delicious and comforting bowls of pho also help us ease our longing for Vietnamese food.

Several casual restaurants sit near the museum and along the main streets of town. You will easily find simple and family-friendly dining options throughout the area.

1.5. Returning to Calgary for the Night

Later in the afternoon, we drove back to Calgary. The return drive took about ninety minutes. We stayed at the Sandman Signature Calgary Downtown Hotel that night. Except my memory reminds me of its unspacious washroom, the hotel was a very central one, where you can easily access many restaurants, stores, etc. Actually, we didn’t spend much time there, just a quick night, then we left very early the day after. I can also remember clearly the McDonald’s on the opposite street, where we bought our breakfast for the road trip to Lake Louise.

By the way, many travelers choose to stay overnight in Calgary before continuing their Alberta travel adventure. Downtown Calgary offers several convenient hotel options. Staying near the city center makes it easy to explore restaurants, parks, and shops.

Day 2: Lake Louise and Exploring Banff Town

The second day of our Calgary itinerary 5 days took us into the heart of the Canadian Rockies. We left Calgary very early in the morning and drove west toward the mountains. Our destination was the world-famous Lake Louise.

Lunch that day took us to Hankki Banff. The restaurant serves Korean street food in a casual setting. It was a fun and quick stop before continuing our exploration.

Later in the evening, we enjoyed dinner at Hello Sunshine. The restaurant combines Japanese cuisine with beautiful mountain views.

2.3. Staying at Banff Park Lodge

That night, we stayed at Banff Park Lodge Resort Hotel & Conference Centre. The hotel sits close to downtown Banff and offers comfortable accommodations for families. You can easily walk from the hotel to nearby restaurants and attractions.

Day 3: Bow Falls, Lake Minnewanka, and Driving Back to Calgary

The third day of our Calgary itinerary 5 days started with a relaxed morning in Banff. Banff feels especially peaceful early in the day. Cool mountain air fills the streets, and the surrounding peaks create a beautiful backdrop for a morning walk. On that beautiful day with the cold breeze, we welcomed the very first snow of the year. That was a very remarkable moment for my family, as it was the first time my wife and kids had seen snow.

Many visitors spend time exploring Banff Avenue, the town’s main street. There are small shops selling souvenirs, outdoor gear, and local products. Moreover, cafés and bakeries make great stops for breakfast or coffee.

You will find plenty of cafés, boutiques, and souvenir shops. Popular pedestrian areas such as Stephen Avenue attract both locals and tourists. After spending time exploring the area and buying a few souvenirs, we headed back to the airport for our return flight to Toronto.

• Autumn also provides a wonderful travel experience. Cooler weather arrives, and the surrounding forests display vibrant fall colors. During our visit in early October, we even hoped to see the first snowfall in Banff.
