1. Order Coffee at the Bar

If you want to save money and time, order your coffee at the bar and drink it standing up, as the locals do. This way, you will avoid the service charge and the long wait that comes with sitting at a table. You will also get to experience the lively atmosphere of a Roman bar, where people chat and socialize over a quick espresso.

2. Buy Bus Tickets Ahead of Time

If you plan to use public transportation in Rome, make sure you buy your bus tickets ahead of time from a tabacchi (tobacco shop), a newsstand, or a vending machine. You cannot buy tickets on board the bus. If you get caught without a valid ticket, you will face a hefty fine. You also need to validate your ticket once you get on the bus by inserting it into a yellow machine near the entrance.

3. Be the Architect of Your Own Days

Rome is a huge and crowded city, with many attractions and sights to see. To avoid getting overwhelmed and wasting time in lines, plan your itinerary carefully and buy tickets in advance online whenever possible. Try to visit the most popular places at off-peak times, such as early morning or late afternoon, and avoid weekends and holidays. In addition, leave some room for spontaneity and exploration, as Rome has many hidden gems and surprises waiting for you around every corner.

4. Break Bread like a Roman

Rome has some of the best food in Italy, but you need to know where and what to eat to enjoy it fully. Avoid tourist traps near major attractions that serve overpriced and mediocre food. You should look for authentic and local places where Romans eat. Try some of the typical Roman dishes. For example, carbonara (pasta with eggs, cheese, and bacon), cacio e pepe (pasta with cheese and pepper), saltimbocca (veal with ham and sage), carciofi alla giudia (deep-fried artichokes), etc. And don’t forget to treat yourself to some gelato (ice cream), which is acceptable any time of the day or year.

5. Don’t Break the Laws for Tourists

Rome has some specific rules and regulations for tourists that you should be aware of and respect. For example, you are not allowed to eat or drink near fountains or monuments, or to throw coins into any fountain other than the Trevi Fountain. You are also not allowed to dress inappropriately in churches or religious sites, which means covering your shoulders and knees. Last but not least, you are not allowed to touch or climb on any ancient ruins or statues, as they are fragile and protected by law. Remember, ‘When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do’!
