10. Annapurna

It is the tenth-highest mountain in the world. Actually, Annapurna is the name given to a series of peaks. The highest is called Annapurna I, with a height of 8,091m. The peaks in the Annapurna range are among the most dangerous to climb. In fact, they have a mortality rate of about 40%. The Annapurna area has six major peaks, Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Annapurna IV (7,525m), Gangapurna (7,455m), and Annapurna South (7,219m). Maurice Herzog & Louis Lachenal first climbed on June 3, 1950.

9. Nanga Parbat

One of the highest mountains in the world, Nanga Parbat has a beautiful night sky full of stars.

Pakistan has the ninth highest mountain in the world, the 26,660 feet (8,126m) tall Nanga Parbat. Especially, it was well-known as the “Killer Mountain” because of its high fatality rate until the first half of the twentieth century. However, it is less dangerous to climb now, but still very difficult. This mountain has a vast and impressive peak that rises above its surroundings in Pakistan. It is located south of the Indus River in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Hermann Bahl from Australia was the first person ever to climb Nanga Parbat in 1953.

8. Manaslu

Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world with an altitude of 8,163m. It is located in the Mansiri Himal, a mountain range in the west-central part of Nepal. Its name, which means “Soul Mountain”, comes from the Sanskrit word Manasa, which means wisdom or soul. Manaslu was first conquered on May 9, 1956, by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition. It is often the first choice for adventurous people who want to climb 8,000m mountains.

7. Dhaulagiri

This 8,167m high mountain is in the north-central of Nepal. It is a very beautiful mountain. In fact, the name Dhaulagiri comes from Sanskrit where Dhawala means “Dazzling, White Beautiful” and Giri means “Mountain”.

The normal climbing route of Dhaulagiri is the Northeastern ridge. Dhaulagiri was first conquered by Austrian, Swiss, German, and Nepalese explorers on May 13, 1960. Also, Dhaulagiri is famous for having the best view towards the Annapurna road, which I just 34 km away. Furthermore, there is Kali Gandaki Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world.

Over 8,201m above sea level, Cho Oyu is located on the border of Tibet and Nepal, in which Tibet has more parts. Cho Oyu means Turquoise Goddess in Tibetan. The mountain is the westernmost peak of the Khumbu sub-district of the Mahalangur Himalaya, 20km west of Mount Everest.

The mountain is a good starting point for newbies who want to practice conquering the high mountains of the Himalayas. Indeed, Cho Oyu could be the easiest mountain to conquer on this list. Many climbers consider Cho Oyu is relatively more accessible than other mountains. Joseph Jöchler, Herbert Tichy, and Pasang Dawa Lama are the first ascenders of Cho Oyu on Oct 19, 1954.

Mount Makalu is the 5th highest peak with an elevation of 8,463m above sea level. The mountain’s location is on the southeast of Mount Everest, at the border of China and Nepal. The first ascent to the summit was in the spring of 1954 by a team of American climbers led by William Siri. Particularly, the Southeast Ridge and the Northwest Ridge are the main climbing routes to Makalu’s peak.

The mountain’s location is on the border of Nepal and India, located in the southern part of Mount Everest. In fact, this mountain was once to be the highest mountain in the world until 1852. Interestingly, the name Kangchenjunga means “The Five Treasures of the Great Snows” because its summit contains five peaks: the main summit Kanchenjunga I (8,586m), Kanchenjunga West (8,505m), the central summit (8,482m), Kanchenjunga South (8,494m), and Kangbachen (7,903m). They represent the 5 storehouses of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books.

Kanchenjunga is known to have a climbing fatality rate of up to 22%. That resulted from poor environmental conditions and often strong avalanches. Joe Brown and George Band of the 1955 British Kangchenjunga expedition were the first climbers to ascend the summit on May 25, 1955.

2. K2

K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest. K2 is located in Pakistan in the Karakoram range of the Himalayas. There are many peaks along with the Karakoram range. Yet, K2 is the highest peak of the Karakoram range and also the highest peak in Pakistan. Besides, K2 is known as “Savage Mountain” due to the difficulty of climbing and the second-highest mortality rate on this list. One in four people who have reached the top dies from trying.

K2 was first conquered by an Italian expedition team led by Ardito Desio. His team, Lino Laceselli and Achille Compagnoni successfully reached the peak of K2 (8,611m) via the Abruzzi Spur climbing route on July 31, 1954.
