Fairmont Banff Springs review, if you’re searching for what it’s really like to stay in a castle in the heart of Banff National Park, you’re in the right place. During our recent trip to Canada through the Canadian Rockies, I had the chance to experience this iconic hotel firsthand, and it truly felt like stepping into a real-life fairytale.
From its breathtaking setting to the luxurious rooms and world-class service, this historic property is often considered one of the highlights of any Banff trip. But is it actually worth the price, especially compared to other luxury stays in Alberta travel destinations? In this honest review, I’ll share exactly what you can expect, based on my personal experience.
Before diving into the details of my stay, let’s take a closer look at the story behind this legendary castle hotel and what makes it so unique.
First, Where is Fairmont Banff Springs?
Honestly, I didn’t know about this castle before. My friend introduced me and took me there. So all I know is, first, Fairmont Banff Springs is located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Secondly, it took me an hour to get there by shuttle bus from Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, where we were before, to the castle village. And finally, perhaps you may want to try Google Maps and type the name ‘Fairmont Banff Springs’. You will know exactly the spot and even the way to go there.
About the Hotel

Fairmont Banff Springs was formerly known as Banff Springs Hotel, built in 1888. It has gone through several stages of redevelopment and restructuring to become the latest building nowadays:
- The Canadian Pacific Railway opened the hotel in 1888. It had 100 rooms at the time.
- In 1902, the building underwent an expansion and renovation, with 200 more rooms added.
- By 1906, much of the hotel’s original structure has a proposal for replacement. A “Painter Tower” was completed in 1914.
- A disaster in 1926 caused a big fire in the original building. It had to be rebuilt in 1928.
- The Monarch of Canada visited the hotel in 1939 during their royal tour of Canada.
- In an effort to free up labor for the war, the hotel had to shut down from 1942 to 1945.
- From 1968 to 1988, the hotel underwent some renovations, including the winterization process, and one to prepare for the 1988 Winter Olympics.
- In 2001, the hotel officially changed its name to Fairmont Banff Springs as a rebranding effort of its own company.
Interesting fact: At the time I visited the ‘castle’ – I love to call the hotel this way, I saw a plate with four diamonds hanging in the area of the receptionist. Meaningly, Fairmont Banff Springs records its name in the AAA Four Diamond Hotels Standard with its ‘distinctive fine dining, well-services amid upscale ambiance’. Only the top, worldwide-level businesses in hotels and restaurants achieve it.
Here are My Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel Reviews
Location of Fairmont Banff Springs
This is exactly what I want, and honestly, it’s something you will want too when planning your Banff trip. The Fairmont Banff Springs is located right in the heart of Banff National Park, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery that makes your Canadian travel experience feel truly unforgettable.
Compared to Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, where I stayed previously, I found this location much more convenient. The hotel sits just behind the main Banff area, and it’s only about a 10-minute walk to Banff town, where you can find plenty of shops, cafes, and local restaurants.
At the same time, you still get the best of nature. The hotel is beautifully tucked into the landscape of the Canadian Rockies, so don’t be surprised if it feels like you’re in heaven when you open your room window. The views of the mountains, forest, and surrounding nature are simply incredible, and this is what makes a Calgary travel itinerary so special.
Service and Staff Experience
I’m always looking for something to criticize when reviewing a hotel, but here, I honestly have to use the word “perfect”. The staff at Fairmont Banff Springs were friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help. From check-in to throughout the stay, everything felt smooth and professional.
One moment I clearly remember was when they gently upgraded my room to a better one with an incredible mountain view. That small gesture made a huge difference and instantly elevated the whole experience.
Whenever I had questions or needed assistance, they were always there, responding quickly and with genuine kindness. This level of service is exactly what you expect from a top luxury hotel in Banff National Park, and they truly delivered.
Facilities and Amenities
The facilities at Fairmont Banff Springs are extensive, and honestly, it’s hard for me to list everything. I didn’t even have time to try them all, but I’m sure you will pretty much enjoy what they have, at the level of a AAA Four Diamond hotel.
They have two swimming pools, including an indoor pool that is perfect for winter, which is very important in Banff National Park. There is also a large, well-equipped gym for those who want to stay active during their trip.
In addition, the hotel features multiple restaurants and bars, offering a variety of dining options. I particularly loved sitting at their outdoor café, enjoying a drink while taking in the breathtaking mountain scenery. That’s a lovely experience I won’t forget.
For relaxation, the hotel also offers a spa experience (even if you don’t try it, it’s worth knowing it’s there), adding another layer of luxury to your Canada travel stay.
Overall, the facilities match what you would expect from a world-class hotel, making it one of the best places to stay during a Banff trip.
My Clean, Comfortable Room at Fairmont Banff Springs
Fairmont Banff Springs truly delivers when it comes to comfort and luxury, and this was one of my favorite parts of the stay during our Banff trip.
I love anything they do. The room was very clean, and everything was prepared carefully. I always check the bathroom first when checking into a hotel, and yes, I saw a jacuzzi there waiting for me to relax, which I absolutely loved. Moreover, they use high-quality toiletries from Le Labo, which made the experience feel even more premium.
In terms of comfort, the bed was extremely cozy, perfect after a long day exploring Banff National Park. The room size was comfortable for a luxury hotel, not overly large but very well designed to maximize space and relaxation.
One of the highlights was definitely the view. I was lucky to be upgraded to a room with a stunning view of the mountains, forest, and surrounding nature. Waking up to that scenery is something that truly defines a memorable Canadian travel experience.
If you want me to say more about the room, I would mention the capsule coffee machine, which is perfect if you enjoy a good cup of coffee in the morning. Overall, I would simply say, it’s excellent.
Things to Do Near Fairmont Banff Springs
One of the biggest advantages of staying at Fairmont Banff Springs is the number of activities you can enjoy nearby, making it perfect for an active Banff trip.
Just a short ride away, you can visit the famous Banff Gondola, where you can enjoy panoramic views over Banff National Park. The hotel has a white BMW X5 to take you to the nearby Banff Gondola. Don’t forget to visit that place. which makes it very convenient.
If you love outdoor adventures, there are plenty of options such as hiking, cycling, and skiing, depending on the season. This is one of the reasons why Alberta travel is so popular among nature lovers. For something more relaxing, you can take a peaceful walk along the beautiful Bow River, right near the hotel.
You can also try activities like golf or even horseback riding in the area, making your stay at this “castle in the Rockies” even more unforgettable.
