A One-day ‘Sea-food’ Trip to Can Gio

I’m taking GMAT and really want to finish the test in late December. However, the two bad practice tests had just turned me quite stressful. So I have decided to take a quick trip out of the city to refresh my mind. Can Gio was the best among the choices because it has a beach that’s good for relaxing, and especially the cheap and delicious seafood there.

Here is a quick guide to Can Gio from what I have experienced so you can have a plan if this place is on your travel-list!

The Coastal Suburban District Can Gio

  • Can Gio (Cần Giờ in Vietnamese) is the home to Can Gio Mangrove Forest.
  • Located 50km from Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Area: 704 km square.
  • Population: about 71,000 people.

How to get there?

The most enjoyable vehicle for a short trip here in Vietnam is motorbike. Started from district 3, you go to district 7 then follow Huynh Tan Phat street to Nha Be district before you arrive to Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal. It would be easier when you get to Can Gio, there is a straight way that leads to 30/4 beach. It could take you about 1h and 40′ to the beach. If you are thirsty, there are some restaurants that serve coconut drink along the way.

Besides that, along the way to the beach would have signs that guide you to the Monkey Island and Vam Sat Mangrove Forest if you want to visit there.

If you wanna take a bus to Can Gio:

There is a bus no. 20 which will take you directly to Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal. You need to buy a ticket to Can Gio district. Then, at the other side of the ferry terminal, you can get the bus no. 90 that will take you to 30/4 beach.

What to play there?

It’s better to go with a group so you can play many games on the beach. There are also some spots that you can take pictures. But to me, I would love to take a seat to the beach, sit down and enjoy the atmosphere that I can’t find in the city.

And what to eat?

One of the biggest reasons that I came to Can Gio is seafood. It’s really cheap, fresh and delicious. You can find many kinds of clams and seafood there: oyster, octopus, squid, shrimp and especially mantis shrimp – my favorite.

In front of the beach, there area some rest-places where you can hire chairs, and they serve meal too. But you shouldn’t buy there; near the 30/4 beach is a seafood market with all the kinds of seafood and those are cheaper. The seller will cook and deliver to you at the rest-places.
